In Psychological and Spiritual communities, behaviorism shows up very frequently as a pervasively disempowering perspective. No one can accurately say with any blanket statement that there is right behavior and wrong behavior. There can be a million different reasons and energies behind a singular behavior, that it makes only the catalyzing power relevant, not the action.
Some examples of behaviorism include statements such as:
“You’re doing it wrong”
“What’s wrong with you?”
“You are Projecting”
“That’s your shadow talking”
“Women always act like ____ ”
“Kids should _____ ”
“No one in their right mind would ever ____”
“You shouldn’t believe ____! The truth is ____!”
Can you see how even seemingly internal or insightful perspectives are actually manipulative behaviorism?
Though sneaky and unclear, these statements are all about the speaker’s self-image and are not actually about what they seem to be about.
